The NATO Association of Canada Sponsors a Book Launch

On April 13, the NATO Association of Canada sponsored a book launch forDeploying Feminism: The Role of Gender in NATO Military Operations, the most recent book by Dr. Stéfanie von Hlatky, Associate Professor, Queen’s University, at the Royal Canadian Military Institute in Toronto. Dr. Madison Schramm, Assistant Professor, University of Toronto, moderated the discussion.

The book illuminates NATO’s engagement with gender and its efforts to foster gender equality. Complied through in-depth research that included fieldwork, Deploying Feminism scrutinizes and offers insights on NATO’s Women, Peace and Security agenda.

The discussion of Deploying Feminism covered significant ground. In addition to NATO, von Hlatky and Schramm also discussed gender equality initiatives in Canada and other settings.

The NATO Association of Canada was pleased to provide a venue for a discussion of an often understudied and vital issue for NATO and international security.“The discussion was an enjoyable exploration of the strides already taken on the Women, Peace, and Security file and a hopeful look at the development yet required by Canada and NATO,” noted Robert Baines, president and CEO of the NATO Association of Canada.

Von Hlatky also enjoyed engaging members of the NATO Association of Canada community about this crucial subject. Of the event, von Hlatky said: “NATO’s commitment to advance Women, Peace, and Security recognizes that gender equality is fundamental to promote stable security outcomes. From military operations to peace talks, however, inclusive security is still out of reach in many contexts. The lively exchange with Dr. Schramm brought those considerations to the fore and I’m grateful to the organizers for prioritizing this important topic.”

The NATO Association of Canada regularly hosts events about NATO. On April 27, the NATO Association of Canada is sponsoring “What’s Wrong with Two Per Cent? Reexamining Canada’s NATO Commitment,” a virtual discussion. To learn more or to register, please visit the NATO Association of Canada’s Eventbrite page
