The ever-changing nature of contemporary global security threats have often challenged longstanding security frameworks established by NATO. Challenges can be utilized as opportunities for improvement and adaptability. In the Mediterranean Sea, NATO’s maritime presence and operations have historically been underpinned by the threat of terrorist activity. However, threats such as sex trafficking have emerged as pervasive issues in places like the Mediterranean, prompting NATO to elicit regional cooperation and implement a multi-faceted response. This article examines current sex trafficking patterns in the Mediterranean region and NATO’s response, which includes collaboration with both NATO and non-NATO members, Operation Sea Guardian and policies on human trafficking and sexual violence.
